The Pharmacy School’s Business Management Office is staffed with well trained and experienced professionals who are here to assist you. Mike Patil, Associate Dean for Integrated Business Management

Mike has been a senior executive who has led and managed business process reengineering, information technology solution implementations, and organizational and strategic consulting for Ericsson, IBM, and American Express. He sees as his mission the full alignment of the Business Management group with the SOP business strategy and requirements, as well as simplifying and streamlining related processes. Mike expects the Business Management group to be customer-centric, and he believes that systems should provide meaningful and timely information at the fingertips.

Finance

Sophie Cheng, Account Consultant, MPIA

Sophie began working with the Finance team in winter 2006 after accruing more than five years of direct accounting and financial experience at companies such as Jenny Craig, Wellpath Select and, finally, at UNC's Lineberger Cancer Center, where she managed finances for the Breast Cancer Spore project with a total annual budget of three million dollars. Sophie's experience at Lineberger creating monthly financial reports for 37 contracts and grants accounts and 12 trust fund accounts will be especially helpful in the SOP Finance and Administrative Office.

Michico James, Account Consultant, MOPH

Michico began working in the Business Management Office at the SOP in May, 2007, but she has been employed at UNC for two years, first as an Accounting Clerk IV for Student Accounts and University Receivables, then as an Accounting Technician II at the Office of Arts & Sciences, and finally as an Accounting Technician IV here at the SOP. Before arriving at UNC, she was a bank teller at Wachovia. Michico graduated from North Carolina Central University in 2004 with a BBA; her major was in Accounting. She is also a Notary Public.

Barbara Lowery, Account Consultant

Barbara joined the team February 2008. She came from Lineberger's Cancer Center with a degree in Accounting. At Lineberger's she reconciled accounts, worked with PIs, and has a lot of experience with grants and trust funds.

Joyce Neal, Procurement Consultant

Joyce has been working for the University for the past 25 years, and several of those years have been spent with the SOP. She has worked as an Administrative Assistant for the bulk of her time at UNC, and her previous position was with the SOP's Professional Experience Program (AHEC). She has completed UNC's Supervisory Program/Training and also acts as one of the SOP's Notary Publics.

Warren Ray, Funds Management Consultant

Warren has been the SOP's Funds Management guru since the Fall of 2005, but his UNC career began in 1994. His background is in C & G (6 years) and SOM (5 years), and he brings many years of management experience from the School of Medicine.

Pat Shields, Account Consultant, MedChem

Pat holds degrees in Business Administration and General Office Technology and has 16 years of work experience at UNC, including five years at the SOP and 11 years in the Dept. of Pharmacology. She enjoys working with the rest of her team, and when she's not at the SOP, she's either dabbling in real estate or keeping on top of her Plumbing and Backhoe company. Pat has three children and enjoys spending time with her grandchildren. Word is she has a passion for chocolate.

Human Resources

Shelby Abbott-Lunsford, Administrative Assistant

Shelby has been in the SOP since the fall of 2005 and has seven years of experience at UNC. Her professional background is in HR, and she is certified as a HR Facilitator. Shelby's last position at UNC was as a Staff Development Technician.

Carrie Johnston, HR Generalist

Carrie joined the SOP team in the fall of 2006, but she has more than five years of experience at UNC, including two-and-a-half years as the HR manager in Health Policy & Administration, SPH, and one year as an Administrative Officer in IPRC. She is a certified HR Facilitator, a certified Manager/Supervisor, and a Notary Public. Carrie bleeds light blue, loves to read and enjoys traveling throughout the southeast US.

Facilities

Phyllis Smith, Facilities Manager

Phyllis has worked as the Facilities Manager of the SOP since 1998, but her professional career at UNC spans an incredible 23 years. Her previous work doing staff support for the Dean's office, as well as a job as an accounting technician for the law firm Byrd & Associates, combine to make her an excellent fit with the Business Management team. While at UNC, Phyllis has continually sought to broaden her skill set by obtaining certifications in Supervisory Resources, Asset Management and Health and Safety.
